A New Old Dress

See, I told you I was back. And for my first outfit post of 2012 a sweet little vintage dress:

As usual, this dress was floor length when I bought it and I'm not sure if I shortened it enough. The fabric is a  nice soft flanel. I think I'll make a pillow out of the the scrap that I cut from the bottom.

Can you tell I'm trying to get into the swing of blogging again? I could only get one good photo of myself and I have no idea what to write. I'm sure it'll all come back to me.

So much for growing out my bangs. I cut them and gave the rest of my head a trim. It was a few months over do.  My hair was getting pretty ratty.

I have been cutting it myself  for about 4 years. I've made an awful mess of it a few times, but now I can't stand the idea of someone else cutting it. I have a certain way I like it and I don't know how to explain it to someone else

the outfit:
lace shrug: thrifted 1$
dress: thrifted 4.50$
panty hose: drug store, 5$ and some change
Shoes: thrifted 3$
white cherries and chain necklace: thrifted 2$
vintage locket and tiny assemblage pendant by Wrens and Roses: 16.50

If it's not Love

This afternoon my sweetie and I went on a little coffe date and this is what I wore. Everything is thrifted except the tights. I found the shoes this weekend for three dollars. They are 90s-does-70s-does-40s, chunky, crushed-velvet covered glory.  Here's a closer look:

How do you feel about chunky heels?. I am really digging them right now.

I made a pretty good haul this weekend at the thrift store. I will be photographing and sharing some of it with you in the next couple days. Until then, here are a couple of scarves and an old simplicity pattern from Village Discount. I was so happy to find the pattern. It's un-cut and my size! The scarves are just pretty.

Well, now I must go. We are going to order in sushi and watch some movies on Netfix. Nothing too crazy, just a cozy Valentine's Day at home. Have a great evening.

Another Handmade Collar, This One Crocheted

crochet collar by Wrens and Roses
earrings by Wrens and Roses
necklace: was my grandmother's, religious medal
top: thrifted
skirt: thrifted/vintage
tights: target
shoes: thrifted

So , as you can see, I made another lacy, detachable collar last week. This one is crocheted and much simpler than the knit one. It was also a lot easier to make. What do you think? I like this one much better.

I feel strange today. I put on my Grandma's old religious medal and now I miss her a lot. She raised me as a child and was pretty much my best friend all through elementary school. Towards the end, she kind of lost her wits. It was hard to watch because she was such an intelligent woman. Maybe I'll post a bit more about her later. For now, I am going to have more tea and toast in her honor

The Great Chicago Blizzard of 2011

Blouse: Target
Sweater: free box in an alley (whatever, its cashmere)
yet another wool Skirt: thrifted/vintage
Boots: thrifted/vintage

I took these pictures this afternoon just before the snow started coming down in buckets. We are supposed to get more snow this week than we've had since 1999. But life doesn't stop for the weather. I had an international order to ship and nail polish to buy. I live about 3 blocks from the main post office but it was still a crazy walk. I couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of me and my tears were freezing on my cheeks. But this outfit plus a hat scarf and gloves kept me pretty warm. If this weather keeps up I may not leave the house tomorrow. My day will consist of tea, yarn and netflix.

Just One...

Blouse: thrifted/vintage 3$
Wool Skirt: thrifted/vintage 5$
Belt: thrifted/vintage (don't remember)
Boots: thrifted/ vintage 8$

I take my own pictures with a generic 50$ point and shoot and a self -timer. I could only get one good picture of my outfit today. I was having trouble getting it to focus, so I just gave up. This one turned out nicely though. I was surprised. I used a filter in picnic called "orton-ish." I like it. I think it hides the fact that I have a super cheap camera. Or, I don't know, maybe it makes it look even cheaper?

Ah well, I'm off to bed. g'night

Things Are Tough All Over

The snow is falling softly this morning in big fat flakes. Days like this in Chicago remind me of the old Cheech and Chong flick "Things Are Tough All Over." Have you seen it? It's pretty cheesy. I'm not really recomending it (unless you love bad movies like I do). As a California child, I am still fascinated by the snow even after 5 years in Chicago. I've decided I'm going on an adventure today. Well, really just a long walk. And this is what I'm wearing (plus a scarf and gloves). I'll be back later with some thrift tips.

Raspberry beret: The kind you buy in a second hand store 3$.
Velvet Coat: thrifted 7$
Sweater: Ralph Laren, gift
Blouse: Thrifted 2$
Jeans: Levis (bought years ago don't remeber 40? 50?)
Boots, fleece lined: Thrifted 8$
